Love Stories Suck These photographs are about getting inside into a quiet and peaceful universe - the connection that Lucy Mahler has with nature, her odd rhythm, and her strong political beliefs. Lucy is someone who deliberately chooses at each turn, not to fit into the boxes society creates for us.
This work is also about the generation my mother was a part of —a generation that was full of beliefs during the sixties and which nowadays lacks the hope and freedom that they used to fight for. Lucy has strong memories of a vivid past, but she also finds joy in the small things. She calls her own depressed side as a moment of deep resting. For me, this is a contradiction of our time; the necessity to rest in a time that never stops. It is the image of someone sleeping during the afternoon when the world outside runs noisily and faster than we can follow. Lucy and I met in September through Craigslist when I first moved to New York City. I was looking for a place to live. She was subletting a room in her two bedrooms apartment in Brooklyn Heights.Lucy is 63 years old, born and raised in New York City, a dancer and a painter. She fought for the Civil Rights Movement, painted big murals around the city and has always believed in the body as a strong gun. Nowadays, she splits her life between Brooklyn where she lives with her cat and Woodstock, Upstate New York, where her mother, Milly, 93, is based. |
